Bramf! I need to write something here!

Sorry to have to be brief, again, but there’s so much to do in a day and so little time in which to do it. Important events follow:

Continue to hang out with Rebekah
Thanksgiving in Vegas, which included:
My sister, Sandlin, and Matt, her husband-to-be, meeting Rebekah, who was only in Vegas for a few hours. Mutual respect was had by all.
Getting completely blitzed in the Voodoo lounge with family and friends, and getting home safely by Taxi, though no one could remember precisely how.
Going to a gut-bustingly funny comedy show with friends and family.
Eating lots of food, turkey and Crub.
Project report: *submitted*.

Okay, um, a few other details too, but no time to write about them. Check out:

Noel.zerothpower.com

And go to the ‘images’ section to see some random pictures. Some of them will be explained eventually, some you’ll just have to guess at.

Done in record time,

Things I did this weekend, in order from least fun to most fun.

Lo) Did my homework and got some studying in. Project is coming along, too. We have a rough draft of the paper in for 'review' by the TA, so he'll either tell us that it's wicked-funky fresh or just 'wicked-funky'. Heh. And I'm coming up on the end of my homework lists for my classes, too. Winding down.

Med-lo) Car. I haven't gotten it fixed yet, but I'm scheduled to bring it in on friday. The check engine light came on. I checked the manual, it means 'get it checked out', but not 'holy crap your car is about to explode don't use it anymore!' So I have tire, service, and check engine light all in one. Not a small bill, but I did find a 15% off entire service charge coupon online. Heh.

Med) Went to the residence of Akin and Mark (Workmates) for a potluck. I made chicken quesadillas. There was chicken and brownies and b33r and a huge TV. We watched 'VH1 Classic' and made fun of the 80's. Lavtrell also oogled Beyonce Knowells and the rest of destiny's child durning the 10 or 20 times that their video game on. They also demonstrated how people dance in 'Hotlanta' (atlanta). It looked silly. But it gave me an idea. From now on I'm going to refer to 'Alaska' as 'Hotlaska'. Which is extra-funny becuase it's not hot. At all. Even a little. Heh.

High) I hung out with Rebekah. A lot.

She came over on friday to my place, and went over to hers on sunday. Saturday was a study night, mostly, and we watched 'The Princess Bride'. Sunday was a hangout day. We went out to an 'American-sushi' restaurant. American sushi is food that is certainly inspired by the original concept of japanese sushi, but that bears only the most passing resembelance. I'm not going to pretend that I'm so well cultured that I think that this is a *sham*, because I don't. You put Avacado or Cream cheese in a roll, and I'm hooked. Yay for K-rab! Tasty stuff.

We also did some studying in the park. Which is lame because it's studying, but good because it's a park. *And* we read tarot cards. She showed me her deck, very different than mine, but very intriguing at the same time. We read cards differently. Some intringuing, or at least interesting, stuff came up. I'll write about my opinions on the subject of tarot cards some other time.

And, um, we like each other. So Yay! Once again I reserve the words 'girlfriend' and 'boyfriend' for more committed, stable relationships, but I think this definitely qualifies as dating. I'll bring my camera along next time and take some photos so y'all can establish a mental image. Who knows, I might actually break the 'one-month relationship barrier'. That'd be a mark.

I could expound about the many things I've learned about her (she likes to talk, I like to listen), but here are a few of the more important parts.

--Working on her Bachelors Degree (Nearly Done) in literary studies, I believe. (All that liberal arts stuff starts to blur together for me.) Wants masters in journalism.
--And works full time and a company that makes models (like a model of a plane, for a corporate entity like 'Boeing'.)
--Writes.
--Will be self-publishing an anothology of poetry soon (a run of perhaps only 50 books).
--Is my Age (24).
--Thinks I'm neat.

That's enough for a teaser.

What else...

My leg is doing much better from last week.
I shaved another 15 seconds off my 3 mile time (36:45).
My head is still shaved, too.
Video games continue to be a delightfull diversion.
I haven't spent enough time writing or playing the drums.
I've got to go get ready for TKD now.
So I'll sign off.
Here.

OOh! Another quicky! A link:

If you don't know radiohead, don't bother clicking. Otherwise. Very do. So funny!

Dag, that stings!

I sustained something that exists between an injury and a boo-boo at TKD last night. It was right at the end of the sparring match. I can’t tell you exactly what happened, which should be an indicator that I was not entirely master of my domain (not really a good thing), but I know that I made a move to my right, and he kicked with his left. He saw it was too close, though, and held back, which is good, but I still took a knee right on the outside of my quads. Charlie horse! Yowza! I think I played it off as pretty manly, I just kinda grimaced and kept my weight off it for a few seconds while I made sure it wasn’t broken or anything, and then even managed to do the end-of-sparring bow. Heh.

It’s really nothing more than a glorified bruise, when you get down to it, I guess I wanged the muscle a bit, and so I’m walking a touch gingerly. I have appropriate range of motion, it just stings when I stretch it (which I’m doing carefully). I’ll heal up just fine with time, I’m sure. Gives me some ideas of things to work on, too. I need more combos. I just sort of ‘kick what seems appropriate’. I need to work on two-or-three kick combos that I can whip out when appropriate. And a bunch of them, too. Not good to be predictable. Constant improvement.

Hopefully I’ll be able to run this weekend, too, but no need to aggravate it. We’ll see.

So what am I working on these days? Well, as it turns out, you know that project that got canceled? Yeah? Well…it’s back on! Such is the nature of R&D projects, usually. But yeah, that’s the thing. We’ll see how it leads into stuff. Wait and see.

Short post, just felt like complaining about my leg.

Ta!

Be proud of me! I can officially say that I *ran* three miles today. Not ‘ran some and walked some’ or ‘walked some and crawled some’, but actually ran. Well, more like a jog, but that’s running! I didn’t stop, I didn’t pause, I didn’t halt once. Well, there was a brief pause at the beginning to give my knees a quick roll-stretch. But other than that, not a single slowing. And In doing so I knocked 3 minutes off my 3 mile time. That a crazy-big lot. My current personal best is 37 minutes. Weehaw.

Pacing is tricky. I seem to be getting better every week at it, but I’m getting better in shape, too. I think I have a sense of how fast I can run, but as I get better, I’ll need to crank it up or else I’ll just be too slow and my time will suffer. Too fast, though, and I risk burning myself out. Trial, error, and experimentation, I guess, unless there are any actual runners out there who care to give any clever advice.

I thought this weekend was going to be horrible. It turns out it might be just exactly the opposite.

I went to bible study on Thursday. Those of you that keep tabs on my schedule (stalkers) know that I usually watch my two classes on Thursday. I actually managed to go to a ‘young adult’ bible study Thursday and still get a class watched. I had to watch the other one on Friday, though, and I thought pushing the homework along the weekend would just be a royal pain. Not to mention that I had to work on my project, too, with Cherise, on Saturday.

Well, the stars must have aligned, or something, because everything came up just fine. Awrasa (co-worker) has a midterm coming up Tuesday and needs to study, and since I’ve been *on her case* constantly, making sure she’s keeping up on her effort, she invited me out to study with her yesterday (Friday). Fine by me, made me get my estimation theory homework done (as much of it as can/am willing to do). That and I *do* so love being helpful. So that potato is in the pot.

And I met with Cherise today, (Saturday) to work on our dreaded estimation theory project. And we finished it. What? Yeah. It’s done. Took about an hour and a half. It went so fast as to almost be surreal. And since I did most of the Matlab coding, she’s going to write up a sketchy rough draft and we’ll edit it next week. The bloody thing isn’t due for nearly a month and the computation work is already done. Can I get a ‘booyah?’ [You: Booyah!] Aaaaawright.

Aaaand, it looks like I don’t even have any DSP homework this weekend. So I’m…uh…done. Yeah. Stars aligned, I guess. Very nice.

So here’s the to-do list.

Call Rebeccah
Fix Tire.

When I went up to Las Vegas for Lacy’s wedding, mom made some offhanded comment about tire pressure. I never check my tires, but she was oddly prophetic, because one of them was a little flat. Well I’ve been keeping an eye one it, and I’m certain that it’s got a slow leak. I’ve been refilling the thing about once a week. Eep! Tire treads look deep enough, so I’m going to wheel the ol’ betsy into a tire shop and get it looked at. I *have* to get it done before thankgiving, because there’s no way I’m wheeling up to LV with sketchy tires. I’ve got time, though.

And calling Rebeccah, cause, well, she likes talking to me.

And Dayv called me! Yay omg yay! I [heart] Dayv!

Voting. Yes, I voted. Voted for Kerry, and he won CA. I voted mostly democratic, except for a few people with listed occupations as ‘engineer’ that were independent. I voted for them just to buck the curve. And there were various state statues I voted on too. Nothing of interest. But I voted. It was pretty neat.

Right, you slugs, 20 laps around the school!

Well that was far more rapid than I though it would be.

My security clearance is in, rather-much faster than I expected it to arrive. Good thing all around, evidently. This gets me cleared to work on some projects that are evidently pretty neat, if not…well…classified. I’m still working on unclassified stuff at the moment, but there’s really no way to know when. That’s up to higher-ups who decide what I’m going to be working on, when to transition, etc. I actually rather like it that way. I don’t really have a preference for what project I’m going to be working on, as I don’t really know the difference between them anyway, I haven’t been here long enough. And if it’s someone else’s responsibility, I just get to do what I’m told. Perhaps it’ll be up to me eventually, but this suits me fine for now. All this moving around lets me see lots of different things, I like variety.

As for what I can and can’t tell you…well…I actually don’t know yet, because I won’t get briefed until Thursday, but chances are that at some point someone will ask me something that I won’t be able to tell them, at which point I’ll say: “Sorry, can’t say.” Then we both move on with our lives.

One strange thing I’ve noticed, just being on the outside of the security clearance, is that these projects have code names, but that most people don’t even use them. Classified knowledge is tricky stuff, and evidently one of the sticking points about names is that you can have a bunch of separate projects that are *actually* interrelated, but you aren’t allowed to make that connection at an unclassified level; so people don’t even use the code names. Things get referred to in nebulous terms like ‘the project’ and ‘the other project’ and ‘one of the things Trung is working on.’ It’s tap dancing, essentially, but it’s evidently required. Probably something I’ll get used to, sort of a less-knowledge-is-better kind of approach.

Hopefully I’ll be able to tell you if I’ve had a good day or not, but we’ll see after the briefing, that may get classified too.

Also, thank you to all of the people that have volunteered their time to tell people scathing details about my personal life. And if you didn’t get interviewed, don’t despair, I may get put in for another security clearance eventually, and who knows, perhaps you’ll get interviewed for that. Think of the possibilities!

Also, within 2 minutes of hearing this news, I also learned that I got a bonus for being such a darned good employee. Weehaw.

I continue to chip away at the masters degree. There’s a project for my Estimation theory class (the hard one) that I’m working on with a co-worker by the name of Cherise. It’s due December 2. We’re starting early just to get it over and done. And because we’re not really sure how long it’s going to take, and if we get hung up, it’ll be nice to have the extra time.

I bought a couple games this weekend. I finally laid hands on a game I’ve been eyeing for a while: ‘Call of Duty’. I wasn’t convinced that it would be playable on my old computer. Not only does it look super-fly and super-smooth on the new one, but it’s a ton of fun to play.

Also, GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS. Those of you not familiar with the Grand Theft Auto line of games are certainly scratching their heads at this point. Let me just say that it’s a great game in a series of great games and I’ve been enjoying it immensely.

My drum-practicing time has been suffering a touch due to the nature of my strained time, but it’s still as fun as hitting anything with sticks is likely to be.

And, of course, TKD is always a blast. I think I made a breakthrough on my fast kick yesterday. I tried something a little different and it felt great. Yay for that.

Halloween weekend was quite nice. Plenty of ‘veg’-time, which is always essential. Derek and I finished up, with several co-workers and friends, a music video that we’re entering in a contest to win as much as $15,000 or as little as $0. It was a bit of a pain to shoot, but at least I got to do my own stunt work. Heh. It’ll be up on www.zerothpower.com in a few days, so look for it there.

I also went to a Haloween party on Friday. I went as the ‘White Ninja’, Derek went as the ‘Black Ninja’. No epic battles, but much fun was had. Derek DD’d for me, too. Quite kind. I met a lovely young lass there too, and got her phone number. We’ve chatted for a bit, but both of our schedules are pretty strained, so don’t look for any blossoming romance. And no, this isn’t the *only* interesting female I’ve met in the past several months, it’s just that my parents seemed to be worried about me, and I thought I’d supply some evidence that I am, in fact, getting out to meet people and be social every once in a while. Just not as often as I like. Bloody classes, and all.

I should think about signing up for the next round of them, too. We’ll see.

I’m still working on my story, too, but I need to sit down and iron out some story details before I can go too much farther. And strained time. I’m just saying that holding your breath for the next chapter might not be the best way to plan your breathing, is all.

AAAAAnd I’m teaching classes again. Even more this time. There’s a new round of new hire training classes coming up, and I’m going to be teaching the SNR class, my MATLAB class AAAAAnd the ‘Radar Basics’ class. Because they asked me if I could, and I can, and I enjoy it. So there. So yay for that too. Those will start rolling around in just a few weeks.

Okay, nothing else! Looking forward to upcoming vacations and seeing family members and the like, classes suck, hope you all are enjoying yourselves.

Consider yourself loved,

-N
