It’s not for me

* * * *

When I first got moved up to the 10th floor, there was a co-worker of mine already up there that we’ll call ‘Tuna’. The man had a lot of snacky-munchy foods in his cube, and was usually quite fond of letting people drop by and grab some eats if they ever got hungry.

Eventually, Tuna got moved off the 10th floor, and I decided to take up the banner of free foodstuffs. I went out to Costco and picked up some Cheez-its and graham crackers. They were pretty popular. I’d eat some of my own stuff too, of course, the reason I have a snack shelf is cause I get hungry during non-eat hours, sometimes, and a man’s gotta have his nourishment. So then I figured, as long as I was going to have food in my cubicle, why not make it public food? So I did. I put a sign up outside my cube proclaiming ‘Noel’s Café’. I even put up prices on it, despite the fact that at Noel’s café, everything is free, free, FREE!

It seems to get larger every time I go to Costco. :)

Well periodically, I run out of food, and it seems like every time I go back to Costco to restock, Noel’s Café gets bigger and bigger. I take requests for food, and the most common one is ‘chocolate’. I usually don’t eat the candy stuff (the more nourishing foods are for me) but it’s popular, so it gets first billing.

I’ve occasionally had people offer to pay me for food, but I figure Raytheon has to have some sort of policy against running a personal business out of your cubicle, so I just keep it free. I have, however, gotten money snuck into my possession somehow. Tricky people, these engineers.

My favorite, though, was one time when I was riding the elevator down with one of the security guards. He looked at me and said, ‘Hey, are you the candyman?’ Yeah, I do good deeds.

So the weekend! It was productive, but not terribly exciting. Come Friday I was *burnt out*. There were a couple of festivities this weekend, but I decided to bypass in favor of rest. Got my lectures watched, my homework done, went out running (sprints) did cleaning, and got myself some food. I also went out to buy myself the sequel to Katamari Damacy. (Which I believe fiancé-in-law ‘M’ bought for me, so thanks that.) It’s called ‘We love Katamari’ and it’s very much like the original, but with enough extras and cool further touches, that I very, very enjoy it. I also picked up ‘Kung Fu Hustle’, one of my favorite movies of late. Good stuff, glad to own it.

J(5) was out of town this weekend, back home at a wedding. Yeah, I missed her a bit.

And the weird thing of the week this week was that I witnessed a huge truck with a huge trailer coming off the freeway by work. And on the huge trailer was another huge truck with another huge trailer on it. Yay, irony! If the truck on back had been carrying a vehicle of some kind, that would have been boss, but it was just a liquid-tank-transport of some sort. Made me laugh, though.

So, I'm looking carefully and I don't see a Costco size Vienna sausage pack. I had contemplated buying one for a teacher at your sister's high school who has a similar arrangement for starving students in her classes. However, when I brought this idea up, your mother recoiled in revulsion that I would offer "artificial meat" to healthy children. Indeed, your sister got into the act and extended the rejection of concept with wounding words of dismissal when I mentioned it to her on our last call. Something like "not real food...". I mean, I thought vienna sausages were a staple of midnight snackage and recent college life, you know, right up there with Top Ramen, microwave popcorn, and pizza. Am I so out of date?? Additionally, I must say I admire anyone who can stand so near choclate and stay composed, let alone thin. Oh well....Your father who loves you.

Vienna sausage, not so much. I didn't see that in my college years. Maybe it's a regional thing, but for me it was pretty much ramen, PB&J and Cheez & Macaroni...and pizza. I, however, due to dutiful finantial planning and the support of an *excellent* parental financial support system, was able to afford real food (the stuff they keep in or near the produce aisle) for all my years of collge. So bully to that!

I used to keep a loaf of bread, a jar of jam and one of peanut butter in my locker in Phoenix. Come lunch time there were always people trolling for food- it was both a good way to refuel and atasty way to make friends. Although I suspect you EE types don't have time to actually stop to make AND eat a sandwich, it can be very nice to enjoy a proper un-presquished PB&J.

I finished my pchem homework without your help, but I did recruit advice from nearly half of the physics department. Smart guys them physicists. Exam early next week, expect to hear from me this weekend.

You rock (metaphorically, obviously LA is too good for rocks)-- Love S
